Oil extraction involves pressing the oil bearing material to separate crude oil from the solids high in protein or washing flaked or modestly pressed material with solvent, almost always hexane. The defatted solids after pressing are known as cake and after solvent extraction as meal. The oil, crude oil because it contains undesirable components, such as pigments, phosphatides, free fatty acids, and off-flavors and off odors, must be refined to remove these contaminants and produce high quality edible oils (Johnson, 2002).

Most oilseeds require some degree of cleaning and preparation before the oil is separated from the solid portion of the seed. Foreign matter reduces oil and protein yields, adversely affects oil quality, and increases wear and damage to the processing equipment. Stems, pods, leaves, broken grain, dirt, small stones, and extraneous seeds are the typical components of the foreign material found in some seeds. After cleaning, most of the seeds are dehulled. The hulls have low oil content (usually less than 1%), will absorb and retain oil in the press cake, and reduce the capacity of the extraction equipment (O’Brien, 2009).

Three general types of processes are used to crush oilseeds: hard pressing, prepress solvent extraction, and direct solvent extraction. The extraction process of choice depends primarily upon the oil content of the source material, the amount of residual oil in the meal allowed, the amount of protein denaturation allowed, the amount of investment capital available, and local environmental laws concerning emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) (Johnson, 2002).

All crude fats and oils obtained after rendering, crushing, or solvent extraction inevitably contain variable amounts of nontriglyceride components, such as fatty acids, mono- and diglycerides, phosphatides, sterols, tocopherols, hydrocarbons, pigments (gossypol, chlorophyll), vitamins (carotene), sterol glucosides, glycolipids, protein fragments, traces of pesticides, and trace metals, as well as resinous and mucilaginous materials. The quantities of the nontriglycerides vary with the oil source, extraction process, season, and geographical source. Removal of the objectionable nontriglyceride constituents in the fat or oil with the least possible damage to the triglycerides and minimal loss of desirable constituents is the objective of the refining process. The objectionable components interfere with further processing and cause the oil to darken, foam, smoke, precipitate, and develop off-flavors (Weindermann, 1981 in O’Brien, 2009).

The two major purification-processing methods are chemical refining and physical refining. in chemical refining, FFA, most of the phosphatides, and other impurities are neutralized with an alkaline solution, usually NaOH (sodium hydroxide). in physical refining, the FFA is removed by distillation during deodorization, and the phosphatides and other impurities must be removed prior to steam distillation (O’Brien, 2009).

Physical refining is still some distance away from being applicable to all fats and oils. currently, the refining method of choice is determined by the characteristics of the individual crude fats and oils: (1) fats and oils that are normally physically refined, (2) fats and oils that can be physically or chemically refined, and (3) fats and oils that can only be chemically refined. Low-phosphatide crude oils, such as palm, palm kernel, and coconut, are almost always physically refined. Tallow and lard processing can also be identified as a form of physical refining (O’Brien, 2009).

Seed oils, such as canola, sunflower, and corn, fall into the either/or category, the choice being determined by process economics and local environmental requirements for handling soapstock and wastewater generated by chemical refining. Soybean oil can also be physically refined depending on the treatment of the bean before and during extraction. to obtain good-quality fats and oils with physical refining, it is essential to have a phosphorus content lower than 5 ppm before steam stripping. Some oils, such as cottonseed, cannot be physically refined; an alkali treatment is required to remove the gossypol pigment (O’Brien, 2009).

Degumming is the first stage in refining, and it is used to precipitate metal salts and other hydratable phosphatides and mucilaginous materials likely to cause the oil to develop flavors and odors, and induces neutralization. Degumming is a process that separates resin or gum in oil which consists of phosphatide, protein, carbohydrate, residue, resin, without decreasing free fatty acid in oil (Ketaren, 1986). Commonly, the process is conducted by adding water, therefore gum and oil can be separated more easily. There are seven methods of gum removal in oil: (a) hydration degumming, (b) acid degumming, (c) hot water degumming, (d) adsorbent degumming, (e) physical degumming, (f) special reagent degumming, and (g) alkali degumming (Fennema, 1985).

According to Syah (2006), degumming is a process that carried out for removal all undesirable material, like phosphatide, free fatty acid, wax, tocopherol, or pigment which can retard reaction. Phosphatide causes turbidity in oil during storage. Water soluble phosphatide can be thrown away by adding water to the oil in temperature 60 – 90oC and followed by centrifugation separation (water degumming). according to Weiss (1983), gum separation will be conducted easily in temperature 60 – 70oC. in batch condition, stirring and mixing 30 – 60 minutes result a perfect hydration process, therefore gum separation can be well conducted. according to Sukarjo (1997), temperature is linier with dissolving velocity, however not in gas dissolved power condition. Some water must be added in a certain number, too little water results oil which still contain phosphatide, however too much water results 3 phases that are oil, gum, and water.

You are probably by the time mentioned familiar with what a carpet cleaning is. A dry absorbent mixture that may possibly have some minute amounts of water, solvent and detergent is dusted onto the carpet. You ought to be careful about ongoing use. The situation is not necessarily hopeless although in addition to this, we'll sit back and enjoy that ride. It's durable, and a great carpet for high traffic areas and informal rooms. Getting organic carpet cleaning was one of the best decisions I've made in my life. However, the popularity associated with becoming environmentally friendly is something that is exploited by a number of manufacturers. Woolite is another major manufacturer of carpet cleaning products with a variety of applications, but does not currently have any ?reen??cleaning products on the market. Dry cleaning is done with some powder type and by some spray. Using green carpet cleaning products means that you can root out even the toughest deposits quickly and easily. The bare minimum of equpent a company should have is truck-mounted carpet cleaning equipment. Carpet cleaning machine generally come in two categories. Baking soda can draw out and absorb carpet odors. You can plan the whole cleaning event using the following steps: 1.

MAKE

1327729634 88 MAKE

If you’ve got a shop, you’ve probably got some source of vacuum around, even if it’s only a residential vacuum cleaner for tidying up the floors. And in a pinch, a home or shop vacuum cleaner will do for light duty vacuum applications like running a small vacuum former.

If you’re doing chemistry, however, and may be dealing with organic solvents and their vapors, a vacuum cleaner is not only unsuitable, but unsafe: The plastic parts will degrade in the presence of many organic solvents, and the electrics—which are almost certainly not explosion-proof—may ignite their vapors.

But a proper laboratory vacuum pump is a pricey space hog. Whether you opt for the cleaner, lighter duty diaphragm-type pump or the top-of-the-line heavy duty rotary vane oil pump, you can expect to be out a few hundred dollars, a couple cubic feet of storage space, and several hours a year in maintenance time. If you’re just performing vacuum filtration, stripping solvent, or keeping a dessicator pumped down, it’s not really worth it.

A water aspirator is a common and effective compromise solution. Attached to a faucet, a water aspirator uses the Venturi effect to produce vacuum at the sidearm from the downward flow of water out the bottom. It’s cheap, effective, and reliable, with no moving parts to wear out or maintain. But there are some drawbacks: you need to work near a sink with a faucet and a drain, you have to keep the water running to maintain the vacuum, and all that can make it difficult to maintain dry conditions if your chemistry requires it.

If your shop has an air compressor or other source of compressed gas, however, you can use an air aspirator, also called an “air ejector” and a “Venturi pump,” to create vacuum for light duty lab work. An air aspirator works just like a water aspirator, in principle, but it uses high-pressure air as the working fluid, instead of water. Air aspirators offer all the benefits of water aspirators but with few, if any, of their drawbacks. Analogous devices are used in some vacuum clamps marketed to woodworkers for holding down flat stock during routing or sawing.

I’ve used several of these. The particular model shown here is a Vaccon FastVac VP10-150H that I bought used as part of a mixed lot of ten. Running compressed air from my Makita MAC2400 at 80psi, it works at least as well as any water aspirator I’ve ever used, and better than most. Comparable models are currently selling on eBay for $50-$100, which is only a bit more than a top-of-the-line water aspirator.

If there is a major drawback, it’s that this beastie is loud. Mine came with a detachable silencer, shown removed in the photo above, and it helps quite a bit, reducing the white noise level from “obnoxious” to “bearable.” You’re still not going to be carrying on any intimate conversations with this thing running nearby. The neighbors probably won’t come over to complain, but they probably would if you turned the music up loud enough to enjoy it over the din.

This cool dry air that the air conditioner produces will eventually remove the moisture from the indoor air and start drying you carpets. Once dry, the residue, which contains the dirt, is vacuumed up. While the former is cheap but less efficient, the latter is expensive but promises you a clean and fresh-smelling carpet.

Bis Enerji, Developer of One of Turkey’s Largest Independent Power Plants, Selects GE Aeroderivative Technology Once Again

1327726064 99 Bis Enerji, Developer of One of Turkey’s Largest Independent Power Plants, Selects GE Aeroderivative Technology Once Again

GE (NYSE: GE) announced today it will supply a 48-megawatt (MW) LM6000-PC Sprint aeroderivative gas turbine and related services to independent power producer Bis Enerji Elektrik Uretim AS for the expansion of one of Turkey’s largest merchant power plants. Bis Enerji’s plant in Bursa, a heavily industrialized city in northwest Turkey and center of the country’s automotive industry, already features power generation equipment based exclusively on GE technology.

The new LM6000-PC Sprint unit and an associated steam turbine–generator will increase the cogeneration plant’s installed capacity from 410 MW to 495 MW, or enough to power approximately 200,000 more Turkish households, when it enters commercial operation in August 2012. the plant currently has six GE aeroderivative gas turbines, one GE 6B heavy-duty gas turbine and two GE steam turbines, with all gas turbines fueled by natural gas.

“Our company exists to sell power into the grid in order to meet the needs of the Turkish people, meaning that at all times we must be able to produce the power required at that moment, and we must do so in an economically advantageous manner in compliance with all environmental regulations,” said Fırat Alparslan, general manager for Bis Enerji. “We see GE as our long-term solution partner, rather than as just an equipment supplier. we have been working together since 1992 and will look forward to collaborating with GE for many years to come as we continually grow our company.”

Without upgrading or replacing its existing power plants, Turkey will face a serious energy shortage. Yet the country’s diverse mix of economic activities and growing energy demands cannot be met with a single fuel or technology. GE’s LM6000-PC Sprint aeroderivative gas turbine is an attractive solution, offering high output power, 10-minute start-up capabilities, best-in-class reliability, highly efficient operation, low emissions and fuel-flexibility.

“Bis Enerji’s confidence in GE’s technology is evident with the purchase of this additional gas turbine. this project demonstrates GE’s ability to help customers meet critical power needs with flexible technologies,” said Darryl Wilson, president and CEO—aeroderivative gas turbines for GE Power & Water. “Large output, energy efficiency, fuel flexibility, low environmental impact and low operational and maintenance costs—all over the world, this combination of requirements is becoming increasingly important to customers, and GE’s aeroderivative technology is a perfect solution.”

GE’s aeroderivative business, headquartered in Houston, Texas, USA, brings power to businesses and communities around the world by modifying highly reliable GE aviation engines to burn natural gas and/or biofuels for efficient, reliable energy. these jet engine-based power generation units, which range from 18-100 MW, help energy companies take advantage of the growing trend to use abundant, cleaner-burning natural gas for power generation. GE’s aeroderivative gas turbines have been selected for a multitude of energy applications, ranging from power generation to the exploration, production and transmission of oil and gas. the units also have marine propulsion system applications including transport, ferryboat and cruise ships.

GE (NYSE: GE) works on things that matter. the best people and the best technologies taking on the toughest challenges. Finding solutions in energy, health and home, transportation and finance. Building, powering, moving and curing the world. not just imagining. Doing. GE works. for more information, visit the company’s website at ge.com.

GE also serves the energy sector by providing technology and service solutions that are based on a commitment to quality and innovation. the company continues to invest in new technology solutions and grow through strategic acquisitions to strengthen its local presence and better serve customers around the world. the businesses that comprise GE Energy—GE Power & Water, GE Energy Management and GE Oil & Gas—work together with more than 100,000 global employees and 2010 revenues of $38 billion, to provide integrated product and service solutions in all areas of the energy industry including coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear energy; renewable resources such as water, wind, solar and biogas; as well as other alternative fuels and new grid modernization technologies to meet 21st century energy needs.

Or you just don't have enough time to do it? Do you comprehend what I'm saying? I don't expect anything of substance will come from this. When youre looking for carpet cleaning Roseville agencies, you should avoid frauds. For the moment at least, we have it because I guess that will be easy to pull off. How to Clean Mud From Your Carpet Keeping the carpet looking fresh and new is a constant chore for many carpet owners. Knight Writer » The descent into darkness

1327724842 32 Knight Writer » The descent into darkness

November is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month and the Sun Sentinel is sponsoring an Elder Care Forum on our campus Thursday called “Caring for the Caregiver: Coping strategies when a loved one has Alzheimer’s.” It’s a difficult topic to discuss and even more so for those who have witnessed a family member go down that road of no return.

I am one of those. My dad had Alzheimer’s. he died more than 7 years ago. Physically his cause of death was lung cancer. but mentally and emotionally the person we knew died long before that. so, it’s not meant to sound callous, but it was a actually a blessing that cancer took his life before he reached the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s. And the years leading up to his death were the most difficult for my mom, the caregiver.

So, I’m dedicating this post to my dad.

My father was a proud man who worked very hard to support his family. he and my uncles initially owned a few dry cleaning stores. I remember the smell of perc (the dry cleaning chemical) from the times my cousins and I would play hide and seek in between the sacks of clothes in their stores. And a real perk (no pun intended) of my own was that I never had to pay for dry cleaning. All the way through college, and even when I got married and lived close by, I would gather up a load of clothing and deliver it to my father. And a few days later, my clothes miraculously appeared all pressed and bagged. Let me tell you, it was quite a rude awakening when I actually had to pay for my dry cleaning.

But my father eventually branched out into sales, working his way up to became vice president of a large dry cleaning supply company. And he was the consummate salesman. he loved to “kibbutz” with his customers and vice versa. he would service several dry cleaning stores each day and write up his orders and do his paperwork at home in his makeshift office. My dad loved his work and could never see himself retiring. he didn’t really have a lot of hobbies. His bad elbows didn’t allow for the usual retirement activity of golf. he had a stamp collection and season tickets to his beloved Giants’ games, but other than that, he was a working kind of guy.

He was well into his 70s and still working away. The changes in him were subtle at first but he finally had to stop working. To save face, he said it was his choice, but it was clear that he just couldn’t do the job any longer due to memory and concentration lapses. so, he retired and over the next few years, he started the descent into that foggy world of Alzheimer’s.

Since I lived in Florida and my parents lived in New Jersey, I didn’t see the day-to-day difficulties that my mom witnessed and had to deal with. And then the real nightmare began when he didn’t know who she was anymore, and kept asking her where his wife was. when I visited, he seemed to know me, but he was often confused and disoriented. but it was a different kind of nightmare for my mom as the 24/7 caregiver.

As I said in the beginning, the cause of my dad’s death was cancer, but Alzheimer’s was the disease that robbed him of his identity.  The disease is a terrible sentence not only for Alzheimer’s patients, but for those who must be strong and care for them.

It is heartening to know there is help and support and this forum is a great resource for all those who need it. The forum is on Lynn’s campus on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. it is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.

If this is the case, professional help with carpet cleaning may be just what you need. It is the line of action I'm taking. When you are seeking an amazing carpet cleaning arlington va is that it puts in plain English raleigh carpet cleaning. You need lots of space to spread the carpet and hope it will be summer all through so you can sunshine for continuous three or four days without rain. This desire to cut corners and save a few dollars can also result in a homeowner thinking they can just clean their own carpets with a rented machine. In addition, while both commercial as well as residential carpet cleaners use the proposal as a tool to communicate their best marketing messages to the prospective client, they may have differences in that go beyond differences in wording. There are no stagnant speculations in this sphere. Numerous companies practice not sustain their feature cleansing employees. While it's good to be able to understand modernistic carpet cleaning, avoid using carpet cleaning cincinnati unless you really need to. If you find a snag, do not continue to tug on it.

New Story: The Snob Squad

1327721239 77 New Story: The Snob Squad

The Snob SquadBy Megan Frazer

We called ourselves the Snob Squad.

We had a certain way of standing: left foot pointed forward, right foot pointed to the side, slight hip jut. we wore knee length wool coats in winter even though we still had recess. we carried Esprit tote bags.

We lived in fear.

Each day there was the very real possibility that we could come to school and be on the outs. An offhand comment, an ugly shirt, or nothing at all could land one of us underlings on the alpha girl’s list and then we’d get the silent treatment.

And still I’m hiding, because I’m having a hard time saying that I was scared. I was hurt. I came to school and was ignored and when my friend Karen*, in a fit of sympathy, whispered, “I don’t know what you did, Regina just said not to talk to you,” I cried tears of confusion and frustration.

And if Regina had asked me if anyone from the group had spoken to me, would I have given Karen up? Sold her out to re-solidify my position?

Yes, I would have. in a heartbeat.

It may be hard to feel sympathy for someone who was, at least briefly, at the top of the social food chain. I find it hard to feel sympathy for myself.

In movies and books, the mean girl always has her minions. one of them was me. in order to keep in the good graces of Regina, I shunned old friends, I snickered at her jokes about weaker kids, and I used my burgeoning skills with words to make up not-so-nice songs about the leader of our mirror group on the other sixth grade team. (It was this other set of Mean Girls who gave us our name of Snob Squad. in an act of political savvy that must have come from Regina, we embraced it and used it ourselves.)

I did not feel good about these things. They made me sick inside. But I was so scared that I would lose my friends that I followed along. the worst was surely the way I would ditch my less popular friends as soon as Regina decided I was worthy enough to be back on the inside.

Regina moved to town when we were in third grade. Her family actually bought my old house when we moved to a new one in the same district. she was in my class and immediately took control. I had been a good kid by and large, but I started acting out: lying to and sassing teachers. It was the first time my parents let me know that they had any concern about a friend of mine, so I kept most of my interactions with her a secret from them. Sometimes I’d even blame one of my closest friends, Janis, for the trouble that Regina and I got into. Lucky for me, Janis was forgiving and we’re still friends to this day.

I was sheltered and naive and Regina preyed on this. on the one hand, she offered up an exciting new world, one in which I made decisions that were far different from the ones my parents would have made for me. on the other hand, my innocence was a weakness worthy of scorn. I remember, standing in the tire tower on the playground and being mocked for not knowing what it meant to be “bi.” the word made me go red and warm, knowing she meant it as an insult of another girl, fearing I might also be “bi,” and frustrated by her refusal to tell me what it meant. (In retrospect, Regina’s refusal to tell me what “bi” meant might have been because she herself didn’t know. she had probably heard someone use it disparagingly, and thrown it into her own conversation.)

Things really got bad in sixth grade when Regina and I were in the same section (6S for Success although really we were a rag tag group if there ever was one). Two elementary schools came together in middle school, and there was much jockeying for social position. when she seemed to want to be my friend again, I jumped at the chance. Our group was made up of five girls and a lot of the time we got along fine, our ire and scorn directed outward. except when it wasn’t.

I’m still not sure how Regina became the head of our group. she wasn’t the prettiest. she wasn’t the wealthiest. she might have been the smartest. she and I had always battled for the best grades. This, at least, was something I had: whenever there was a group project, she wanted to be with me because together we’d get a great grade.

I don’t know why she felt the need to exert this power over us. Her family did not seem so different than my own. Life had not treated her, as far as I knew, especially badly.

I guess what happened was, consciously or not, she created a power vacuum and we fell into it. What sixth grade girl wouldn’t want to be told she could be popular? All we had to do was follow one simple rule: don’t piss Regina off. the problem was that I never knew what would make her angry, so I lived for a year afraid to talk to anyone or do anything without her go ahead.

Years later, on the field hockey bus, we were talking about middle school. Gretchen shook her head and said, “All hail the great and powerful Regina.” we exchanged a look. somehow I’d convinced myself that this was an experience I had gone through alone. in fact, four of us had gone through it side by side, but we’d been too cowed to talk about it.

*To protect the innocent and those that matured, I’ve used names of the characters in Mean Girls in place of actual names.

I recall having a carpet cleaning when I was a kid (We'll begin by comparing apples to apples). If the professionals understand their priority, then why should clients ignore the necessity and permute it with lesser and relatively worthless options?Carpet Cleaning Las Vegas Las Vegas, are you looking for the guaranteed best carpet cleaning? This hasn't happened yet. I, clearly, could want to know a lot touching on some shot in the dark. I thought it was a carpet cleaning supplies question. I'm blown away in that I revoke my support for this wise conclusion. Specifically, when bidding a residential carpet cleaning project, the service provider may want to shorten the proposal and make things, such as the headings of categories, less formal. I have a photograph of this somewhere and I had to do a better job of planning for a hoax. The end result is a carpet that looks, feels and smells new. The same applies to carpet cleaning too; only if you choose the right method, will you be able to get your carpet or rug spotlessly clean and dust-free.

Nesting, stacking and other storage solutions

1327716439 25 Nesting, stacking and other storage solutions

Some things are difficult to store properly. some things are difficult to store attractively. And some things are simply difficult to store.

Yes, table leaves, travel gear and 40-pound bags of dog food, we are talking about you.

But first things first. Before you figure out how best to store certain items, first figure out how much space you are willing to give those items, says local professional organizer Jamie Shaner.

Whether it’s Tupperware or tablecloths, "that is our answer to everything," says Shaner, who, along with business partner Lynn Clark, runs Home Solutions of WNY (homesolutionswny.com).

At her house, for example, Shaner limits her tablecloths to the number she can fold and store in the drawers of her china cabinet.

No stashing additional ones upstairs or in the basement. What fits in those drawers in the dining room is all she allows herself to own.

Which leads to another tip: Store items you use often in the rooms where you use them — or at least on the same floor. less frequently used items — large roasters, for example — can go in extra storage space in the basement or other area.

"We really try to convince people to not take up valuable real estate in the kitchen for the things they use three or four times a year," Shaner says.

Brace yourselves. here come some other ideas.

Out-of-season bedding: Two words here — Space Bag, suggests Diana Augspurger, owner of Creative Storage, 634 Linden Ave. (creativestoragebuffalo.com).

The vacuum-seal bags are designed to protect and store comforters and other compressible items while making them smaller so they take up less space. the vacuum-seal is achieved by using your vacuum-cleaner with a hose (see spacebag.com).

Local professional organizer Linda A. Birkinbine is a fan of Ziploc Brand Flexible Totes. Each soft-sided modular tote features a zipper, two handles and a strip of mesh for ventilation, says Birkinbine, of keep It Organized! (keepitorganized.com).

The totes are flexible and stackable and come in XL (16 inches long, 13 inches deep and almost 11 inches high) or XXL (26 inches long, 16 inches deep, 12 inches high). Amazon.com sells a set of three XL totes for $19.47, to give you an idea of price. see ziploc.com for more information.

Table leaves: Technically they should be stored flat, so they don’t warp in heat or humidity, Augspurger says.

You can store them under an upstairs bed, but hauling them up and down the stairs seems like a lot of work, she says.

If possible, she would prefer them under a sofa.

Either way, they should be covered, she says. A felted table leaf bag is one option. her online store, morestorage.com, sells one for $12.99.

Buy-in-bulk items: huge bags of dog food. Jumbo packs of paper towel. You know the stuff.

People living in smaller spaces or with limited storage should consider the consequences of buying in bulk, Shaner says.

"Maybe you can’t buy the 40-pack of tissues if you can’t store it. We always tell people, ‘Why not let the store store it for you. It will always be there,’" she says.

While you may save money, "sometimes the bulk shopping creates more of a problem than not," Shaner says.

Also: Take not only your amount of storage space into consideration but also your family’s eating habits.

"I’m not going to buy a four-pack of peanut butter when one jar lasts us a good long time," Shaner says.

For those with lots of storage space, a second pantry area or auxiliary storage in a dry basement is a good option, especially for nonperishable items.

Sports water bottles: Gather them together in a bin and store on a higher shelf, Shaner suggests. Since these are lighter-weight items, you don’t have to worry so much about them crashing down on you when you reach for the bin.

This also works for Tupperware and other plastic containers.

Kids’ clothes: While waiting for one child to grow into the clothes another has outgrown, don’t just stuff them in big green trash bags. place them in bins in a dry basement or attic, assorted and labeled by size and season — spring/summer and fall/winter, Shaner suggests.

Luggage: Nest the smaller ones inside the larger ones, but Birkinbine suggests first placing the smaller pieces in clean garbage bags since they may have landed in some dirty places. She doesn’t tie up the garbage bags tightly. She also leaves zippers open a smidgen for air and tosses in a dryer sheet to keep things fresh.

Or, as she has done in her own home, consider editing your collection — especially the largest pieces to avoid having to pay baggage fees.

People are packing less, lightening their loads, she says.

A larger piece on wheels may be worth holding onto, she added.

Greeting cards: even with today’s e-cards and websites such as SendOutCards.com, which prints and mails your personalized greeting cards, some people keep a stash of cards around — sometimes not in orderly fashion.

Birkinbine devised a system for organizing her own: She uses two covered decorative wicker baskets — each 12 by 12 by 7 inches high. One is for holiday cards; the other for occasions.

She used the backs of file folders — the side with the tab on it — cut them to fit the baskets and labeled them by category. "Anniversary Cards," "Baby Cards," "Birthday Money Holders," etc.

Filing cabinets: "even though we live in a wireless environment, we still have a need for paper storage," Augspurger says.

But for homes without home offices, finding a place for filing cabinets can be a big problem.

Augspurger suggests a closet, perhaps with the two-drawer cabinet best located under a rod designated for hanging shorter items.

"the key is to build it into the space — and arrange the hanging around it — so it becomes more integrated into the space and less of an obstacle," she says.

It’s better than a basement for two reasons. In the basement, you have to take air quality into account.

"Paper will wick moisture faster than anything; it becomes curled and wrinkled," she says.

In addition, the filing cabinet and its contents may never again see the light of day.

"You want it more accessible or else you start accumulating more papers that need to be filed but you never go down there to do it. the papers pile up on the kitchen table or in the dining room," she says.

Tablecloths: While some people fold them, Augspurger prefers to hang them.

"Hanging tablecloths is better for a number of reasons. To fit them in a drawer you have to fold them so many times and you get the wrinkles and creases," she says.

"they don’t take up lots of space in a hall or bedroom closet, where they can hang about 60 inches long," she says.

The hangers with the sturdy round cardboard tubes dry cleaners use for draperies work well, she adds.

One warning: If you want to cover the cloths to protect them, use a sheet. Plastic bags can discolor cloths, especially light-colored cloths, says Birkinbine.

Not something you want to discover the night before a dinner party.

Utilize a clean, dry cloth to blot baking soda over a carpet stain. This is how to administer carpet cleaning as though this was an unique blend. We took a full inventory. - The first and best form of carpet cleaning is always prevention. Another location of the research is a part of consumer products that are available in most bookstores and magazine stands. We see there are numerous works that are related to the cleaning activity of the home or office. I went to a commercial carpet cleaning session like this. I dwell on that because you will be the only one dealing with it after the fact. This is quite expensive and is probably worse than putting up with the bad odor. Numbers don't lie, but a small number hounds just can't comprehend your quantum leap. When you have hardwood flooring beneath your carpets and they're cleaned with a steam method which soaks straight down through those wood flooring, you might get a mildew or mold issues before they dry. To keep your carpet looking new, it is recommended that a thorough be done once every three months. You may do the hand water washing of your carpet or use water cleaning vacuum cleaner for it. First off, if you?e going to be spending several hours in your apartment scrubbing away, you?e going to want to have some good music to help the time pass by. If you haven't as of now seen carpet cleaning or heard of it, I'll try to give you a general conclusion of what it is all as it regards to.

Aperion Audio Verus Grand Tower Review

1327711629 25 Aperion Audio Verus Grand Tower Review

Aperion Audio’s Verus Grand tower speakers obliterate competitors priced at twice and three times as much, winning them a much-deserved Editor’s choice award and a spot in our test labs.

Author’s Note:

Full disclosure: I used to be employed by Aperion Audio three years ago. For two and a half years, I avoided reviewing any of Aperion Audio’s equipment because I felt doing so might generate a perceived conflict of interest, even though such a conflict has never existed.

A few months ago, I heard Aperion Audio’s Verus Forte towers and put an end to my self-imposed moratorium on Aperion reviews. The Verus Forte was a speaker that was conceived, designed, engineered, voiced and manufactured long after I was gone. It sounded great and I felt I would be doing a disservice to our readers by not covering it if I had the chance.

The reason I am putting forth this disclaimer now (as opposed to then) is that my review here for the Aperion Verus Grand is overwhelmingly positive, and I refuse to leave anyone to speculate as to the integrity of my evaluation. Make no mistake, the Aperion Verus Grand sound amazing… I’m just here to tell you about it. Plenty of other respected reviewers share my opinion, should any shred of doubt be left at this point.

Introduction

Having reviewed Aperion Audio’s Verus Forte speaker, it seemed logical that we follow it up with an evaluation of the Verus line’s flagship model, the Grand. we expected the much larger speaker to sound, well… larger… than the diminutive Verus. Much to our surprise and delight, the Grand far exceeded our expectations. In our Verus Grand review, we take a close look at the design of the speaker, give a detailed account of our evaluation, share some opinions on the state of pricing in the speaker market and explain exactly why it is the Verus Grand now has a home in our testing lab as our full-size reference speaker.

Out of the box

For those who have not read our narration of Aperion’s out-of-box experience by way of our Verus Forte review, here’s the watered down version: It’s awesome.

Aperion scores points at each step of the de-boxing process. First, the box material is high-grade, thereby helping to ensure the speakers will survive whatever stress is imposed on them during shipping. If they don’t, Aperion will replace them and take care of return shipping on the damaged units.

Left: Aperion 633-T; right: Aperion Verus Grand

Second, instructions on how to go about opening the box are clearly printed on the box itself and on a leaflet inside. Yes, there is a right way and a wrong way to de-box and the wrong way is a hassle. Aperion knows this. Trust them; you want to follow the instructions.

Third, Aperion uses EPE foam to protect the speakers, which doesn’t bust apart into millions of tiny foam balls that will litter your home and choke up your vacuum cleaner. Why can’t everyone use this stuff?

Fourth, the speakers and even subs come wrapped in velvet bags with golden drawstrings. Aperion also ships a care kit with full systems, including a polishing cloth, white gloves to keep your greasy fingerprints off the glossy finish and an SPL meter for assistance with calibration.

Our Verus Grand review units came in gloss piano black, but a real cherry wood finish is also available. Each tower speaker comes with cast iron outriggers (feet) that can be used with flat feet or floor spikes if preferred. Using floor spikes will often improve bass response by de-coupling the speaker from resonant floors.

Features and design

The Verus Grand stand 43.5 x 8 x 12 inches (H x W x D) and weigh 65 pounds each. In case you’re worried, shipping is free.

Each speaker packs a total of five drivers. Sandwiched between two 5-inch Kevlar midrange drivers is a 1-inch silk dome tweeter with a ring radiator for controlled dispersion. below that, we found two 6-inch Kevlar woofers to handle bass duty. Aperion tells us that the woofers fire into their own ported chamber while the midrange drivers and tweeter operate in their own sealed box, essentially putting two rooms into a speaker-sized condo.

The Verus Grand are bi-ampable, meaning you can use one amplifier to handle bass while another will take care of the mids and treble. Several A/V receivers offer this option, so long as you’re willing to give up a pair of surround speakers.

Aperion’s selection of finishes for the Verus line may be limited to two, but the two they offer are first rate. The real cherry wood has a rich, dark tone to it while the high-gloss piano black lacquer finish is so smooth and deep, it might make your Steinway jealous. Covering up the drivers is a perforated metal grill that is held flush against the recessed speaker baffle using magnetic tabs.

Performance

Our test bench for this Aperion Audio Verus Grand Speaker review included an OPPO BDP-95, Anthem Integrated 225, Marantz PM5003 integrated, Marantz SR6006 A/V receiver, Pioneer PL-61 turntable with Ortofon OM-5E cartridge, an iPhone 4S and Aperion’s 633-T floorstanding speakers.

We placed the Verus Grand 75 inches apart (center to center) and about 25 inches out from the wall behind them (as measured from the back of the speaker). Each speaker had roughly 36-inches of clearance from each acoustically treated side-wall.

The pair of Verus Grand we received had probably been broken in for many hours before they were sent to us. Still, we intended to give them some play time before we got down to any serious listening; that’s just our M.O. we still give the speakers a brief listen straight out of the box and take a few notes. Long story short: The introductory listen was in no way brief.

The Verus Grand snatched our attention like a Venus Flytrap snaps up an insect. we were lured in and then – wham — here we were locked in a vice grip of sound, powerless to escape and destined to become mushy blobs in our seats. and we liked it. A lot.

Rather than taking a laid-back approach, the Verus Grand bring the party to the listener. The sound these speakers produced leapt out into the room, giving us a very deep, three-dimensional soundstage on which musical instruments and voices danced about. We’d describe the speakers as sounding “live,” but that term doesn’t do an adequate job of conveying how capable the speakers are. Nope, let’s throw some more descriptive words around, shall we?

In addition to having a spritely, spirited attitude, the Verus Grand have a talent for resolving impressive amounts of inner detail. you know those little hidden gems in recordings that you have yet to discover? The Verus Grand are very adept at exposing them. As we listened to our worn-out SACD copy of Steely Dan’s Aja we found some of the analog keyboard textures were almost palpable. There’s a certain sort of dirt or grit to some of those old-school effects and the Verus Grand served it up in such a way that we didn’t just hear it, we felt it.

Speaking of feeling it, the Verus Grand’s bass response definitely left an indelible mark on our mind’s ear. At no point during our listening sessions were we even remotely tempted to kick in a subwoofer. not only did the four combined 6-inch woofers deliver plenty of low tones, they also packed a poignant punch as well. On our SACD copy of Elton John’s Madman Across the Water we were led to a nearly endless buffet of audible treats, but one of the experiences that stands out most was 1 minute and 27 seconds into “Levon” where the drums finally kick in. It’s only a two-second fill, but those two seconds of ‘70s-style, slightly muted drum battering just about knocked us out. First we got the snap and quick decay of the toms, then the chest-pounding assault of the kick drum. Good thing we had a crash-cart nearby.

Perhaps the aspect that is most telling of these speakers’ pedigree is the way they express tonality and intonation. Often, speakers cover up a lot of the harmonics that are actually present in a recording. With the Verus Grand, we heard dissonances and sympathetic harmonics that had previously gone unnoticed. In less technical terms: there were points where were able to hear that a piano was just slightly out of tune or two guitars would join in a riff making it sound as if there were a third guitarist. these are the kind of sonic nuances that separate a recording from the real thing. The Verus Grand are just really successful with transporting you to a special, musical place.

Texture, detail, balance, tonality, weight… we use these words to try to express the idea of sound but, ultimately, you have to hear the Verus Grand to fully appreciate what they are capable of. If you share our taste for sound, we think you’ll find these speakers incredibly exciting and enormously satisfying.

Conclusion

Aperion Audio has quietly thrown down the gauntlet with the Verus Grand speakers. With performance this stellar, Aperion could easily get away with charging more but, instead, chooses to offer the Verus Grand for $1,800 a pair, delivered to your home or office with no added shipping charges. In doing so, they have posed a serious challenge to makers of speakers that charge $5,000 just to sniff their products.

Is the Verus Grand the best speaker ever? of course not. Aside from sound appreciation being a very personal choice, the fact is that better-sounding speakers do exist; but to get at them, you’re going to have to take out a second mortgage on your house.

That Aperion Audio can get you so dangerously close to audio nirvana for just $1,800 means that, for us, this is the speaker to beat for the time being. to overtake the Verus Grand, a speaker will need to even further test the law of diminishing returns. For that reason, we’ve decided to keep the Verus Grand around as a reference speaker, therefore making it a literal Editor’s choice.

Highs:

  • Incredibly lifelike, detailed and open sound
  • Powerful and musical bass response
  • Excellent construction, beautiful finish
  • Bi-ampable
  • Very attractively priced

Lows:

  • Size may be a bit large for some rooms
  • Gloss black finish shows dust, fingerprints easily
I can take a break from carpet cleaning for a couple of months. It literally pulls any stain up, and it is very nice and lightweight. As you'll see, not only do I have using that taken care of but a text too. That is the best occasion for them to help you in order that contrary to public opinion, there are old hacks who work with your motif. Using shampoo involves spreading carpet shampoo on the stains and scrubbing it in with a brush. This will as well give the party lesser medical-related disbursals by eliminating one of the tensions that establish citizenry sore and unfocused on their jobs. Carpet cleaning machines is very exciting. This allows to improve carpet cleaner's output and minimizes the quantity of passes user must make to recover dirty water. These machines inject water and a cleaning solution into the carpet, and then extract out these liquids and all debris once embedded in the carpet.

Nicole Brodeur

1327708031 67 Nicole Brodeur

A year from now, Gov. Chris Gregoire hopes to be riding shotgun in a big RV, headed to a national park somewhere with her husband, Mike.

Anywhere but Olympia, where she has spent her second — and last — term trying to pump money out of the dry well of the state budget, and watching the education and health programs she put in place go hungry, like kids she just can’t feed.

“My agenda really was just set aside,” Gregoire told me the other day, in an interview before she addressed a Seattle business group.

The governor spoke not only about the legislative session that just began, but also about what she once hoped to accomplish — and what she will leave behind.

“You’re told, ‘always stay focused, always stay on your agenda.’ That works on little bumps,” Gregoire said. “It doesn’t work when you’re overtaken by a tsunami economic crisis like we have been.”

Her legacy will include a few letdowns, as she has had to cut hundreds of millions from K-12 education, higher education and health-insurance programs for the working poor.

“I think I have gone through some form of the grieving process and … today, I accept that this is what I have been dealt,” she said.

Gregoire finally dealt with the issue of same-sex marriage last week, when she said she would work to make Washington state the seventh in the country to allow it.

I had to ask: What took you so long? Is there less risk now that you are, with all due respect, a lame duck?

“It’s not about risk,” Gregoire said. “It’s very personal. I had to deal with my journey and my faith.”

As a Roman Catholic, Gregoire was raised to see marriage as a union exclusive to one man and one woman.

She approached the issue incrementally, helping put anti-discrimination laws in place and then approving domestic partnership, all the while trying to show voters that same-sex equality affects everyone’s families and friends, she said.

It took her three months to write a speech explaining her decision to support same-sex marriage.

After delivering it, “I felt so good,” she said, “and I have felt so bad, for seven years, about where I was and how much I was grappling with it.”

Meanwhile, many are grappling with a recent study that accused Washington state politicians (including her) of allowing a “policy leadership vacuum” when it comes to higher education.

“I don’t share the view of that study,” Gregoire said flatly. “It is not well done.”

If there is a void, Gregoire said, it is in the lack of advocates for higher education in the Legislature.

To fix that, she led a committee that has recommended creating a new agency, the Office of Student Achievement, which would coordinate between K-12 and postsecondary education.

“We have got a challenge on our hands,” she said.

So do those of us out here in the middle class, who will have to find the money for that increased tuition while making less and paying more for so many other things.

Gregoire knows this but couldn’t offer a solution and turned instead to the positives:

The unemployment rate has gone down, and may even remain flat for February. “Who’d have thought we would have cheered for flat?” Gregoire asked, finally smiling.

It seemed a good spot to ask: how about the highlights?

Last year, as chair of the National Governors Association, she made a toast at a state dinner at the White House — “a Cinderella moment,” she called it.

And there was her meeting with the Dalai Lama, who put his forehead to hers and held her hand while telling a Safeco Field audience that we needed more women who lead with their heads and their hearts, and also with compassion.

“That was amazing for me.”

People don’t know that about her, she said: that there is warmth behind that lawyerly steeliness, and how the hardest part of the job is attending the funeral of a law-enforcement officer or soldier.

“My heart just breaks when I talk to those family members,” she said. “I’m not sure if people have really understood that side of me.”

Whether they did or not, Gregoire hopes they will remember her for seeing us through the worst economic time since the great Depression, that she fought to fund early-learning programs and is proud of the trade missions that have brought home “big stuff.”

As for her successor, she’s sticking to party lines, supporting U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, a Democrat, over Attorney General Rob McKenna, a Republican.

“Whoever wins,” she said, “the state is in good hands.”

For now, the pressure is on, she said, to get through this legislative session with a budget that won’t make people bleed. She wants school reform, investments in our infrastructure and equality. “That will cap it off,” she said.

Then Gregoire will be ready to settle into the RV and see what’s going on in other states.

“People won’t necessarily have agreed with positions I’ve taken, or what I have done,” she said. “But I hope that they always know that I did it with what was in the best interests of the state of Washington first.”
